With over 194 countries in this world, it’s easy to think that “a country is a massive land consisting of an area with a large number of people.”

But, did you know that there are countries so small that cities in other nations have a larger population? Kuala Lumpur with a population of around 1.6 million has more people than all the countries on this list!

Mostly found in the Caribbean, Europe, and the Pacific, check out these countries with the world’s smallest populations. Most have less than 70,000 people, and one even only has 1,000 people.

The Vatican City is the world’s smallest country. With an area of 44 hectares, this city has a population of 1,000 people. The St. Peter’s Basilica church in Vatican City used to hold a world record as the largest church in the world before Basilica of Our Lady of Peace was completed.

After gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1978, Tuvalu became known as one of the smallest countries in the world in terms of both size and population. It is also considered to be the least visited country in the world as reported by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

Population: 11,000 people


Located along the French Riveria in Western Europe, the area of this country is just 202 hectares. Home to the famous casino Monte Carlo, Monaco is known as a recreation playground for the rich. It has one of the world’s smallest populations, and guess what?

Monaco doesn’t have any income tax regulations for its citizens. How cool is that?

Marshall Islands

Officially named as the Republic of Marshall Islands, the entire surface area of this country is just 175 square miles. It is made of volcanic islands and coral atolls.

Population: 53,145 people


Located in the east of Australia, Nauru is the smallest island country in the world. Known as the “Pleasant Island” and it was quite for popular its phosphate mining in the 1980’s. With an area of 21 sq km, it comes right after the Vatican City in size.

It is also the country with the most overweight people in the world!

Population: Less than 15,000 people
