Happy 20th birthday, Nando’s Malaysia!

Birthdays are always fun, but it is extra festive when we share the happiness with everyone. That’s exactly what happened last week when Nando’s celebrated their 20th birthday in Malaysia. Here in KK, the party was held at Nando’s Imago. We were treated to delicious food, fun activities, warm hospitality… and did I mention delicious food?

But first… a history lesson

Nando’s first opened in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1987 and spreads its wings to Malaysia in 1998. Armed with a special weapon called Nando’s PERi-PERi sauce, it took Malaysia by storm and introduced us to the wonder of their flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken.

They pride themselves for the PERi-PERi, or the African Bird’s Eye Chilli, which gives Nando’s chicken its unique taste. Nando’s works together with over 1,400 small-scale farmers in over 18 growing regions in Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe and South Africa. So, not only are they making delicious sauces, they’re helping many farmers along the way. Good job, Nando’s!

It was a “PERi-PERi” fun evening for us

Going back to the event, it was a fun-filled evening for all attendees. The event was hosted by KK12FM’s Farish and Amy D (a.k.a. Auntie Patrin) and they managed to liven up the evening with their antics and playful banter. We also played games with them, and although our group didn’t win, we nonetheless had so much fun playing it.

As soon as we arrived at Nando’s Imago, we were served with their Chicken Skewers and Chicken Pita, which was a great way to get us in the appetite for more of their chicken. While we were waiting for the event to start, we even got the chance to make our own PERi-PERi sauce. Who knew that you can make your own PERi-PERi sauce in the comfort of your home!

When the event started, we were treated with their signature flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken. I’ve tasted my share of their grilled chicken over the years, and I must admit that the taste is awesome as ever. The meat was flavourful and tender and the meat practically fell off the bone without it being overcooked. And to top it off is their PERi-PERi sauce, which further enhances the taste of the chicken. And their PERi-PERi Brownies? That stuff is made of heaven!

Ending the night with a full tummy and a warm heart

The Carrybeanies had a lot of fun during Nando’s birthday celebration. 20 years is no easy feat and attending the event showed us a little glimpse of how Nando’s has stayed as a strong game-player in Malaysia. From what we have seen, their success can be attributed to their great food, warm staff and how the overall Nando’s culture just translates into a fun and welcoming vibe for everyone.

So to Nando’s, happy 20th birthday. Here’s to another 20 years and more!
