The Bean Express is an on-the-go cafe located in Wisma Merdeka, right in the heart of Kota Kinabalu City. A definite first impression from our team (and probably to most customers) would be really how small the place is. Locating the cafe could be trouble for first-time goers, so here’s a tip: it’s next to KFC.

“The Bean Express is the perfect stop for busy people looking for a quick coffee fix.”

You’re greeted by a clean black-brownish minimalist hipster setting (which some of us Beanies are fans of). To top it off, this is an ideal place to bring your laptop, order a cup of coffee and get things done. Why? The Bean Express offers a great view of the beautiful blue ocean against the city, and it’s motivating.

Service was just too good! Their fast and friendly staff/baristas are always ready to serve with a smile. Not sure what to have? They’d gladly offer their recommendations. We find that very helpful when visiting a new place.

About the food, we HIGHLY recommend getting the Turkey Ham Sandwich (RM5)! It’s really good. Trust us! We suggest pairing it their Hot Caramel Macchiato (RM8.80); it’s one of the smoothest we’ve had in KK. The Custard Butter Toast (RM5) also did not disappoint: it was an explosion of sweet, crunchy goodness in our mouths.

Spaghetti Bolognese X (RM6), but it could definitely have used an extra spice or a hearty dash of pepper. If it’s a warm day or you’ve been walking in the midday sun, we recommend the Pink Panther Soda (RM9.80). It was refreshing and quenched our thirst immediately.

“Trust us when we say that turkey ham sandwich is really good because it is.”

We can’t really complain about the portion size as we can see The Bean Express targets customers who want a to-go option. So you’ll get a healthy-sized portion quite speedily. If anything, the Crispy Cheese X (RM10.80) could have been slightly bigger for the price we paid. Overall, however, the prices were pretty reasonable for KK’s standard (we know the food is expensive in the land of below the wind).

So would we hit The Bean Express again? Yes, expect our team to pop in every now and then cause we are in love with your sandwich and quiet working environment.

But please make sure the WiFi works next time 😉
