Oh, durian galore! It’s an early fruit season for Sabah

If you stopped by a tamu recently, you’d have noticed piles of fruit for sale. In an odd phenomenon, fruits have been ripening here six months early.

Did you have rambutan for Christmas?

If you’re like me, you would probably walk around the market and then proceed to buy a jar (or two) of  pickled bambangan. This is a seasonal wild mango fruit grown and a huge favourite among locals here. However, I was surprised to see a stall laden with durian.

And back home, my rambutan tree had been bearing fruit during Christmas-time, which was quite strange. Fruit season usually starts in the middle of the year and last for around three months.

So what’s going on?

Well, it seems a change in weather patterns has resulted in fruits galore for all of us! According to the New Straits Times, fruit farmers have been harvesting unusually high yields of fruit since late last month.

It’s a tropical plate of flavour with durian, mangosteen, jackfruit, papaya, tarap (known as marang) and bambangan at competitive prices.

According to the report, everyone is benefiting from this fruity phase, with good prices for fruit such as durian. The king of fruits is selling at around RM10 to RM30 per kg for certain types, which is a steal considering a Beanie paid RM50 per kg for a durian early last month!

Of course, fruits such as the indigenous tarap and bambangan will remain slightly more expensive due to lesser production and increased demand.

A fruit-lover in the office said it was a great opportunity for everyone to start eating healthy. “We have a horde of chocolates here, and being able to get fruits at great prices will help some of us choose healthier food options. Of course, we still love our chocolates.”

At the tamu, most of the fruit sellers grabbed the opportunity to sell jeruk bambangan (pickled bambangan), a sweet and sour, sometimes spicy indigenous dish loved by Sabahans.
