The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Looking Your Best

If the vast sea of makeup tutorials on YouTube were to be believed, we’d all be spending hours in a day just getting ready to leave the house.

But let’s be real.  Very few of us actually have the time for that.  I, personally, only have, at most, 20 minutes to spare in the morning for getting ready.  I’m a lazy girl, admittedly, and that’s the absolute maximum amount of sleep I’m willing to sacrifice.  But I know I’m not alone in that.

So for all of you just like me, here are some tips and hacks for the lazy girl to look somewhat presentable.

Skincare comes first

The thing is, many girls wear makeup to cover up their imperfections.  On days where we don’t get the sleep we need, it’s a blessing to be able to slap some concealer on our eyebags and pretend they don’t exist.  But if you’re hormonal like me, you probably find yourself worrying more about breakouts instead.  And having to worry about covering up acne or textured skin can be incredibly time consuming.

Not just that, but you end up spending more time than necessary trying to make everything look smooth and natural.  Yes, I may be lazy but I also don’t think it’s ‘natural’ to be spending so much of your day fixing skin issues when it can be prevented altogether.  Especially when regular use of heavy makeup will aggravate your skin even more.

With proper skincare, you eliminate the need to ‘fix’ any issues.  Your makeup has a smooth, healthy base to lay on and on days you don’t feel like wearing makeup at all, you don’t have to!  Being able to look at makeup as an option instead of a necessity will not just save you time, but also do wonders for your confidence in the long run.

Invest in your eyebrows

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul.  But how can I look through your windows when your curtains are a crazy mess?!

The eyebrow fascination has been an ongoing trend since the early 2010’s but its purpose in relation to the face is timeless.  Eyebrows are commonly referred to as the most important feature on your face.  This is because we heavily depend on our eyebrows for emotional expression.  Studies show that without them, it is much harder for people to gauge our emotional state.  The same study also shows that people are much harder to identify without their eyebrows as compared to other facial features.

A common misconception is that eyebrows are difficult to master.  But it’s really a matter of figuring out your preferred tool.  Pencil drawing your eyebrows, for instance, is not so much about skill as it is about finding a pencil with a colour and texture that suits you.  But if drawing them yourself is still a little too intimidating for you, it’s no big deal!  From tinting to threading to microblading, there are plenty of services in the market that will give you the brows of your dreams.

When in doubt, use mascara

With flawless skin and perfect eyebrows, I’d say you’re good to go!  But if you’re feeling a little boring, you can always amp it up a bit with some mascara.  Because if there’s one thing girls obsess over next to eyebrows, it’s eyelashes.  Like I said, eyes are the windows to the soul and we have to give it as pretty of a frame as we possibly can.

Mascara is a lazy girl’s dream, able to create definition and give your look a little kick in just a few flicks of a wand.  And these days, there are so many different kinds of mascara to choose from to give you your desired look.  If you’re looking for long, spidery eyelashes, you can invest in a lengthening mascara.  If you’re interested in thick eyelashes, get a volumising one instead.  And if you’re looking for more natural looking lashes, there are mascaras in the market that can give you that as well!

Makeup does not have to be complicated

At the end of the day, your makeup routine should be completely individualised to your needs and preferences.  It should accentuate your features without overpowering them.  And don’t underestimate the power of confidence.  If you’re not comfortable with your look, then ditch it!  A good benchmark to follow is that if you no longer feel or look like yourself, it’s probably a sign you’re doing too much.

It doesn’t have to be complicated to look good.

If colour intimidates you into always wearing black, don’t worry—you’re not alone!  Check out our quick and easy guide to workable colour combinations, it’s really not as complicated as it seems!
